Web Wise Kids Creates New National Teen Advisory Board

Web Wise Kids has announced the creation of a National Teen Advisory Board. The board will consist of student representatives from middle and high schools or local communities in 10 states initially. The mission of the National Teen Advisory Board is to assist the non-profit Web Wise Kids in empowering today's youth to make wise choices online.

The goals of Web Wise Kids are to:
  • Bring the issue of Internet safety to the forefront for young people
  • Educate middle school children and teenagers on how to remain safe online
  • Educate parents and teachers about online safety
  • Initiate communication between parents and teens about online content
  • Assist local groups in implementing Internet safety programs
  • "One of the most powerful ways to spread the word on Internet safety to kids is through their peers. There is an instant credibility when this kind of information is delivered by a friend or someone who understands these issues from a young person's perspective," said Judi Westberg Warren, president, Web Wise Kids.

"We're very excited about the potential for this program to have a significant impact on the local level. And our thanks ultimately go to the student leaders who will be giving their time to help others stay safe on the Internet as well as serving as an invaluable conduit of information to help us continually improve our efforts," she added.

At the core of the program will be the establishment of school-based CyberClubs. The purpose of the clubs will be to share information on avoiding prevalent dangers on the Internet. CyberClub activities will include playing Web Wise Kids Internet safety games; organizing safety weeks/months; mentoring at elementary or middle schools; speaking at local PTA, PTO or booster club events; conducting student and teacher surveys and polls; and writing for school or community publications and web sites on important Internet safety topics.

Teen Advisory Board representatives will report on the latest Internet trends; serve as advocates for Internet safety in their communities; volunteer at community safety events; post blogs, podcasts and videos about Internet safety facts, tips and suggestions; and participate in an annual summer retreat in Southern California.

In addition, the Teen Advisory Board will provide intelligence and guidance to Web Wise Kids on the latest challenges facing young people online to assist in the development of additional resources for addressing these critical issues.

By addressing threats like piracy, fraud, online romance, bullying, social networking, blogging, cyber stalking, online predators, identity theft and more, Web Wise Kids programs prepare young people to be their own first line of defense so they can safely explore the best that the Internet has to offer.
