Why a water rights lawsuit?

Two Bakersfield-based corporations – Diamond (owned by Grimmway) and Bolthouse – sued various public agencies, including Rosamond, over access to the Valley's groundwater. Diamond/Grimmway filed suit in 1999, while Bolthouse filed in 2001.

Rosamond filed a lawsuit in response to those filed by these two large corporations, who have a water monopoly and are seeking to take more than their fair share of water. These corporations are attempting to take as much Antelope Valley water as they can use. If this occurs, Rosamond would be forced to increase its imported water supply, resulting in higher water rates for our community. If we don’t protect our water supply, our customers will be faced with skyrocketing rates, like Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County Waterworks District No. 40 filed a complaint and it is anticipated that other public agencies, such as the City of Palmdale and the City of Lancaster, will also file cross-complaints to protect their residents’ water supplies.

This lawsuit is about protecting Rosamond’s natural resources, preventing corporate monopolies and keeping water rates affordable. Rosamond is dedicated to protecting its present and future water supply for the community’s families, schools, businesses, parks and other community services.

Large corporations taking more than their share of Antelope Valley water – What does this mean for Rosamond?

• Increased water rates.
• Decreasing water supplies for residents, schools, parks, businesses and community services.
• Increased dependence on expensive imported water.
• Decreased control of its local water supplies.
Bottom line – disastrous to Rosamond’s economy and quality of life.
