"Construction on the Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22) Improvement Project is nearly complete! The SR-22 Project, slated for substantial completion in November 2006, will enhance traffic flow and remove bottlenecks along the 12-mile stretch of the SR-22."

Bridging the Divide

For years, the Lewis Street bridge has connected residential communities south of the 22 to commercial, entertainment and employment centers north of the SR-22. In September 2005, OCTA demolished the old Lewis Street bridge and began building a new one to accommodate the newly widened freeway. The portion of the SR-22 that passes under the Lewis Street bridge will be moving 12 feet to the north to accommodate the addition of carpool and merging lanes on the freeway.

In November, the new and improved Lewis Street Bridge will open. The new bridge will measure 200 feet in length and 70 feet in width. Located above SR-22, the 4-lane structure will restore an important north-south connector while providing up to 17 feet of clearance for vehicles traveling in both eastbound and westbound directions.

When it opens, commuters, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to safely and quickly "bridge the divide" that now exists and again connect directly to such locations as The Block at Orange, The Crystal Cathedral, UCI Medical Center, Angel Stadium and countless other destinations.
