Improving the View Along SR-22

Commuters will enjoy a smoother and scenic drive on the new 22. In addition to an ambitious landscaping plan that will beautify the freeway with the planting of 11,000 trees and plants, OCTA will be installing 400 pilasters that enhance the look of soundwalls and feature the identity and character of communities bordering the 12-mile freeway.

There are two types of pilasters: Major pilasters feature city logos and serve to mark city limits. At just under 16 feet tall, they weigh between 18,000 and 20,000 pounds. Minor pilasters are about 15 feet tall and weigh just over 6 tons. Minor pilasters will be installed throughout the freeway and will feature a unifying logo symbolizing Orange County.
