"Construction on the Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22) Improvement Project is nearly complete! The SR-22 Project, slated for substantial completion in November 2006, will enhance traffic flow and remove bottlenecks along the 12-mile stretch of the SR-22."

The Rise and Fall of the "Horseshoe" Connector

More commuters use the eastbound SR-22 to northbound I-5/SR-57 "horseshoe" connector than any other single interchange on the SR-22. In fact, nearly 50,000 commuters use it every day. So why is it being demolished this coming weekend? Because the current structure does not provide adequate vertical clearance over the newly widened SR-22. Earlier this month, OCTA opened an improved "horseshoe" connector to the east of the existing structure that meets new design and operational requirements.

The realigned connector, which also has a slightly larger radius than the existing, will make for smoother transitions from the eastbound SR-22 to the northbound I-5 and SR-57 freeways, and will meet the needs of commuters for years to come.

Demolition of the old connector will occur the weekend of Sept. 29 through Oct. 1. Crews will bring down the structure in stages to preserve the its stability and maximize safety throughout the process. The entire process, including clean-up, should take a total of 37 hours.

The Bristol Street off-ramp from the eastbound SR-22 will be reopened before the demolition to help ease congestion in the area. Throughout demolition, OCTA will implement a traffic management plan that maximizes commuter safety, as well as mitigates construction impacts to surrounding communities.
