SR-22 Project Celebrates Two Years of Progress

The Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22) Improvement Project celebrated its second year of construction on Sept. 22. Commuting to work or school can be a challenge, especially if your daily route has been detoured or your on- or off-ramp is temporarily closed. The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) would like to thank you for you patience and cooperation over the past two years while we have been working around the clock to bring you the New 22. We are pleased to report that the SR-22 project is slated for substantial completion in November 2006.

The Rise and Fall of the "Horseshoe" Connector

More commuters use the eastbound SR-22 to northbound I-5/SR-57 "horseshoe" connector than any other single interchange on the SR-22. In fact, nearly 50,000 commuters use it every day. So why is it being demolished this coming weekend? Because the current structure does not provide adequate vertical clearance over the newly widened SR-22. Earlier this month, OCTA opened an improved "horseshoe" connector to the east of the existing structure that meets new design and operational requirements.

Feds Greenlight SR-22 Carpool-lane Pilot Study

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently authorized a SR-22 carpool Lane Access Pilot Study. During the 24-month study, carpoolers may enter and exit SR-22 carpool-lanes at any point along the freeway, as opposed to the current Southern California regulation of restricted access at designated points of entry/exit. Currently, regulations in northern California allow carpoolers to enter and exit carpool lanes at any time.

Improving the View Along SR-22

Commuters will enjoy a smoother and scenic drive on the new 22. In addition to an ambitious landscaping plan that will beautify the freeway with the planting of 11,000 trees and plants, OCTA will be installing 400 pilasters that enhance the look of soundwalls and feature the identity and character of communities bordering the 12-mile freeway.

Magnolia Street Added As Full Bridge Replacement

As part of the Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22) Improvement Project, the Magnolia Street bridge will be replaced. Due to recent federal funding received by the city of Garden Grove, the Magnolia Street bridge was modified from a widening to a full replacement to accommodate the city's future plans to widen the roadway below. OCTA has absorbed this modification as part of the current project to avoid additional cost and reduce future impacts to motorists.

Bridging the Divide

For years, the Lewis Street bridge has connected residential communities south of the 22 to commercial, entertainment and employment centers north of the SR-22. In September 2005, OCTA demolished the old Lewis Street bridge and began building a new one to accommodate the newly widened freeway. The portion of the SR-22 that passes under the Lewis Street bridge will be moving 12 feet to the north to accommodate the addition of carpool and merging lanes on the freeway.
