Carpool-Lane Pilot Study Moving Ahead, OCTA Seeks Public Comment
Earlier this year, OCTA requested that Caltrans consider changing the policy governing carpool-lanes to allow carpoolers to enter and exit carpool-lanes at any point along a freeway, rather than only at designated locations as the current rules mandate.
In response to OCTA's proposal, both Caltrans and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have agreed in principle to conducting a pilot study on the "New 22" when it is completed later this year. The pilot study will last 24-months and will be designed to monitor the effect of the proposed new carpool-lane policy on safety, travel time and traffic violation and accident rates. When completed, Caltrans will evaluate whether the continuous access policy should be expanded to carpool lanes on other Southern California freeways.
Before then, however, Caltrans and OCTA would like to know how you think carpool-lanes should work. Do you think carpool lanes should change or stay the same? Should carpool-lanes operate the same way during peak and off-peak times? Tell us what you think by going to www.octa.net/sr22 and taking the 1-minute SR-22 survey. It's fast and easy.
