"There are less than 300 days of construction until the 'New 22' is
completed and we see a safer, faster, easier commute. It's exciting."

SR-22 Bridge Construction is in Full Swing!

Widened Bridges

The majority of the bridges on SR-22 will be widened rather than replaced. The staging of construction for widening is simple. The contractors will first shift the three traffic lanes toward the center, creating a work area on the outer edge of the lanes. Within this work area the contractors will build the new lanes on the outer edges of the freeway, while maintaining three open lanes to the traveling public. Currently, in most places the lanes have already been shifted and in some cases the new lanes of the bridges are being paved.

Bridges to be widened include:
  • Knott Ave.
  • Garden Grove Blvd. (West)
  • Hoover St.
  • Beach Blvd.
  • Newland St.
  • Yockey Str.
  • Trask Ave. (West)
  • Taft St.
  • Newhope St.
  • Task Ave. (East)
  • Garden Grove Blvd. (East)
  • The City Dr.
  • Santa Ana River
  • Bristol St.
  • Parker St.
  • South Orange
  • Santiago Creek
  • Glassell St.

Replacement Bridges

Replacement bridges have the same first step of shifting traffic to create a work area for the additional lanes to be built on the outer edges. An additional phase is then required for the replacement. Once the outer lanes are paved the traffic is switched to the new outer lanes and barriers are placed in a football shape in the middle of the freeway. The new placement of the barriers creates a work zone in the middle of the freeway for the crews to rebuild the middle section while keeping the new lanes open for the traveling public. Currently, most of the replacement bridges are well underway. In the next month you will see the traffic switch to the new outer lanes.

Bridges to be widened include:
  • Magnolia St.
  • Harbor Blvd.
  • Lewis St.*

    *Denotes overhead bridges
  • Brookhurst St.
  • Euclid St.
  • Pearce St. Pedestrian bridge*

Have you seen...

This is a pile-driving rig. The SR-22 has four rigs on the project. The rig can range in size from 100 to 120 feet high and weighs approximately 100 tons. The pile driver places the piles, which act as a foundation for the bridges and connectors throughout the project. Each bridge has up to 150 piles and approximately 11 piles can be driven in one day.

When this machine is operating it appears to have a large metal cylinder in the cage, while a heavy force stomps the cylinder into the ground.
