New 22 Innovation is Saving Time

The Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22) Improvement Project is designed to improve commuter safety and cut traffic time. And, with OCTA working to deliver these improvements as quickly as possible, that will soon provide a smoother commute to home and work.

The New 22 is the first improvement to an existing California freeway using a method called “design-build,” where a single contract is awarded for both design and construction. By utilizing design-build, the project will be completed more efficiently. In fact, design-build will reduce OCTA’s construction time by nearly three years. The total construction time for the Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22) Improvement Project is expected to be only 800 days – much faster than construction time typically needed for a project of this size.

“The design-build construction method provides tremendous benefits for Orange County families and businesses,” said OCTA Director Mark Rosen. “We will be able to see major improvements to the 22 Freeway delivered in an unprecedented timeframe, keeping people, goods and services moving.”

Innovation is a key OCTA component for delivering effective transportation solutions to Orange County – now and in the future.
