Welcome

The concept of public/private partnerships seems to be on everyone's tongue these days. If addressed correctly, it is an approach that can offer the best of both worlds with a powerful combination of public policy and private initiative.

We are pleased to have been involved recently in endeavors designed to build these kinds of relationships. One is the Great Anaheim Apps Challenge, initiated by Mayor Curt Pringle and his Technology Advisory Council. This effort is bringing together the public sector and technology providers to enhance life in Anaheim. Other examples include opportunities we have had to bring together area entrepreneurs and Congressional leaders to collectively tackle important issues such as an event on clean energy and alternative transportation held at the headquarters of T3 Motion, Inc., in Costa Mesa.

As we enter the holiday season and look toward the close of 2009, we hope leaders in government and commerce will pause to consider how crucial it is that we find innovative means of collaboration in the year to come.

Sincerely,

Sinan Kanatsiz

Congressional Members Meet with Area Leaders
Discussions Share Perspectives and Solutions

The KCOMM Government Affairs team is excited to have been a part of several meetings and events this month with key Congressional Leaders.

On Nov. 11 Congressman Dana Rohrabacher served as keynote speaker at an event on Clean Energy Transportation held at the headquarters of T3 Motion, Inc., in Costa Mesa. John Voget, executive director of the Santa Ana YMCA and members of the YMCA's Youth and Government program joined area business leaders. The Congressman emphasized the need for alternative energy development, the lack of new infrastructure across the country, and the importance of entrepreneurial businesses. The Congressman was recognized for his contributions to building a better energy future for coming generations.

Congressman Ken Calvert met with Pretend City Children's Museum on Nov. 11 to discuss innovations in education, followed by a wine and cheese reception at the Coto de Caza home of Thomas Gephart. The event provided area business and community leaders an opportunity to join the Congressman for an intimate discussion on the current economic environment and methods for job creation.

On Nov. 12 Congressman Lynn Westmoreland from Georgia's third Congressional district spoke to the Hispanic 100 at Ramirez International in Irvine. The Congressman discussed some of the most pressing issues facing our country today: security, alternative energy and economic development.

Great Anaheim Apps Challenge Leverages Technology
Idea Submissions Top 500 from Around the Country

Launched on Sept. 29, the Great Anaheim Apps Challenge initiated by the City of Anaheim and Mayor Curt Pringle is set to wrap up on November 30. The Challenge has generated more than 500 creative "apps" ideas from individuals around the country and throughout Southern California. It is the first project of its kind on the West Coast to seek ideas directly from the public rather than from professional software developers.

Anyone 16 years and older can submit ideas, as many and as often as they like. There is still time to contribute to this innovative effort to leverage technology for the benefit of the city's residents, businesses and visitors at www.AnaheimApps.org.

Challenge participant Chris Winn, Associate of Innovus Solar in Anaheim, said, "This is an amazing opportunity to offer suggestions for ways to make Anaheim an even better place to work and live through the development of mobile and web apps that have become so popular."

Optimism Offered to Cal State Fullerton Students
Best Practices for Job Hunting Outlined

Given the deteriorating state of the economy, many students believe that employment opportunities are effectively nil. However, this is not the case, according to a panel of seven business leaders, including KCOMM CEO Sinan Kanatsiz, who spoke about jobs available for those who are willing to "play by the rules."

The event took place at the Titan Student Union at Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 29. In attendance were business majors in a variety of concentrations, as well as visitors interested in learning about the current state of the economy. Businesses represented at the event included the Pepsi Bottling Group, Orange County Credit Union and Ells Certified Public Accountants & Business Advisers.

The panel emphasized that, although strong competition exists, there is still hope for those who adhere to a set of rules and best practices. Applicants for employment should look for a company that is recession proof and learn everything there is to learn about the company. Then follow up with a thank-you note, whether handwritten or via email. A favorable grade-point average is a significant factor. Finally, being truthful is essential.

Facebook Is New Medium for Business Development
Careful Participation Can Build Communication and Interaction

Although Facebook might be looked upon as a portal for social communication and interaction, it can be effectively utilized to grow a business. Perhaps the most important tool for businesses on Facebook are "Facebook Pages." With these, a business can establish or supplement its online presence by having users become "fans" of the business. In order to succeed on Facebook, a business must correctly convey its personality through the online medium.

Facebook is all about interaction and social collaboration. Explicit marketing or sales attempts are not well received. The key is to build relationships with users in order to communicate and interact with potential customers. Fresh and lively content, such as pictures, videos, and status updates, is crucial to maintaining user interest.

In the end, Facebook is less about selling and more about interacting with the "fans," and learning from their reactions, comments and communications in order to provide them with a product or service they genuinely want. Preview Kingston Technology's Social Media Strategy Produced by KCOMM.
