Welcome

As the world economy continues on very shaky ground, there have been tentative indications of at least a bit of stability. As encouraging as that may be, we remain alert in our approach to our business as well as to the conditions faced by our clients. We are focused not only on short-term challenges, but on keeping a clear view ahead to be positioned for growth. That means concentrating on helping our clients strategically weather the current environment and perhaps even gain ground during the downturn. And for KCOMM, it means diversifying our client base, continuing our Signature Event Series, and strengthening our network of international resources. We are confident that hard work, creativity and long-term relationships are the foundation for success now more than ever.

A good example of that was the dedication of the Global Citizen Plaza spearheaded by Ambassador George L. Argyros at Chapman University. President Jim Doti played host to former U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell who received the university's highest honor for a statesman/world leader, the Global Citizen Medal. Previous world leaders honored at Chapman's Global Citizen Galas have included Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Spain's President José Maria Aznar.

Sincerely,

Experts Address Online Safety for Children
Special Event Offers Perspective and Solutions

A KCOMM Signature Event on April 7 brought together a distinguished group of leaders to address the critical issue of safety for children when they are using the Internet and mobile devices. With news stories on predators and the practice of "sexting" popping up almost daily, the issue of protecting children from these threats and teaching them wise behavior is more timely than ever.

As a special highlight of the event, U.S. Congressman Ed Royce was honored with the Web Wise Kids "Children's Champion" award. Guest panelists provided a broad spectrum of perspectives on this issue from the standpoint of education, law enforcement, government, youth services and business. They and the 240 attendees focused on the goal of protecting vulnerable young people in an age of ever increasing technological and communications complexity.

Held at Chapman University, the event was also viewed by 1,400 people via live Internet streaming and was promoted by KCOMM via an integrated communications effort via video, email marketing, public relations, government relations and social media.

Internet Marketing to Continue Growth in 2009
Social Media and Email Marketing Lead Trend

With the economic downturn, companies and businesses across the nation are actively looking for ways to more efficiently market their products and services. The increasing popularity of social media on the Internet and the effective targeting that can be achieved through email marketing have brought these communication strategies alongside traditional marketing in effectiveness and ROI.

According to eMarketer.com, the spread of social media has been rapid, yet marketers have been hesitant to join the crowd based on fear that they would be associating their brands with "questionable" content. However, there has also been rapid change with the beginning of 2009. In a recent report by the Aberdeen Group, about 63% of best-in-class companies worldwide plan to expand their social media budgets by a healthy 17% over last year's spending. Social network advertising is projected to reach $2.35 billion from $2 billion in 2008. As more companies join the social media movement, it is becoming increasingly clear that it is vital to establish benchmarks and assessable goals, along with an organizational focus, in order to measure the impact of social media marketing on sales.

Email marketing has proved to be another valuable tool in reaching out to target audiences. Yet some emerging trends among consumers are steering companies in a new direction. For instance, studies show that when potential customers become overwhelmed by the number of newsletters, subscriptions, or offers they receive, they are extremely likely to hit the 'spam button' instead of unsubscribing from an emailing list. According to eMarketer.com, this threshold falls between 10 and 12 emails. Taking these findings into consideration, it is becoming a popular trend to more closely monitor lists for inactive or unresponsive users. Ultimately, the first quarter of 2009 shows a positive outlook for the future of both conventional Internet marketing and social media advertising.
