Welcome

In a time of unusual challenge, opportunities also abound for taking charge of the conditions we face to improve the lives of those around us. This month, we highlight several special events that we are humbled to have a role in and which we hope will help a broad range of people address issues ranging from business success in very difficult economic times to protecting our children from potential dangers inherent in the irresponsible use of technologies such as the Internet and mobile devices. We also report on the recent visit by President Obama and the ambitious plans he has laid out to move the country toward a more productive and prosperous future. We hope you will join us in striving to maintain a positive outlook as we work together in pursuit of stronger families, communities and businesses.

On April 7, the next installment in the KCOMM Signature Events Series in conjunction with the United States Congress and Web Wise Kids will convene a distinguished group of experts to address the safety of children in an online and mobile world. With news stories on predators and the practice of "sexting" popping up almost daily, the issue of protecting children from these threats and teaching them wise behavior is more timely than ever.

At the event, Congressman Ed Royce will be honored with the Web Wise Kids "Children's Champion" award. The guest panelists will provide a broad spectrum of perspectives on this issue from the standpoint of education, law enforcement, government, youth services and business. All with the goal of bringing the community together to protect vulnerable young people in an age of ever increasing technological and communications complexity.

Look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,

Sinan Kanatsiz

Obama on Education, Energy, and Technology
Investing in the Future Is Central Theme

President Barack Obama's recent Southern California visit brought new hope to the region and the nation. During his stay, he touched on key issues such as the current economic crisis and what must be done to deter its effects. Among the proposed solutions were increased funding and reform for education, as well as the implementation of alternative energies and the technologies that will enable the nation to move down the road to energy independence.

Obama's standpoint on education reform aims to elevate the United States to "world-class" status. To accomplish this, he has asked educators across the country to establish new, higher academic standards. In addition, he has set in motion a comprehensive plan focused on removing limitations placed on the education system. Included in the plan is lifting restrictions on the number of charter schools allowed and encouraging alternative methods to bring renewed commitment to education across the nation.

On alternative energy and emerging technologies, Obama has taken a strong stance on doubling the nation's supply of renewable energy over the next few years. His proposed recovery program aims at spending $11 billion upgrading the nation's power grid to enable the efficient delivery of alternative energy and $15 million developing "green technologies" including solar, wind and clean coal. Obama's ultimate objective is to create new jobs across California and the nation while creating the technologies and energy that will help rebound the economy from its downward trend. And he continues to push forward with his environmental agenda.
