Insight Brings Focus and Flexibility
Pursuing a high school diploma at his brick-and-mortar school while faced with constant distractions was becoming an overwhelming challenge for Patrick Harrington. So last September, Patrick traded in traditional high school for Insight School of California - North Bay, and now his classroom is the dining room of his home in Marin County.
"There were just too many distractions," commented Patrick. "I would talk to people and not get my work done."
He also enjoys the flexibility Insight offers, which affords him the opportunity to work at his own pace and still have time for extracurricular activities as well as his part-time employment at Jamba Juice and Tommy Hilfiger stores.
Additionally, Patrick can take his laptop along whenever he is away from home. If he needs to catch up on his school work, he can login from wherever he may be. Currently, Patrick's classes include Music Appreciation, English, World History, Biology, Algebra, and Running (for P.E.).
He emphasizes his appreciation for the flexibility that Insight offers and adds, "For my Physical Education requirements, I have several options. I can go snowboarding on the weekends and record how many hours I board. I can run and use the step counter provided to me by Insight to record each step. Or I can ride my bike and count the miles!"
When asked what helps motivate him with his studies, Patrick says it's the teachers. "The Insight teachers like me, and they are really friendly and helpful. They create a positive environment for us to learn and are extremely supportive."
Patrick plans to attend Insight through his senior year and is looking forward to continuing his education, possibly at a local community college. He is interested in architecture and city planning.
According to Patrick's mother, Maura Harrington, "It was a mutual decision to enroll Patrick in Insight last September. Without the distractions, Patrick is actually learning. I am impressed by the school and it has been a salvation for our family."
