Student Cyclist Can Blend
Avocation and Career Goals

Orange County student Colleen Cross is going places, whether it's perched atop her high-tech racing bike or in class aiming for a career as a large-animal veterinarian. The Insight online program provides her with the combination of personal flexibility and curriculum quality she needs to achieve her goals.

Colleen came to Insight after participating in a local school district's home school program. She and her family felt that program offered a bit "too much" independence, a lack of accountability, and a confusing curriculum plan. As she completes her first semester at Insight, Colleen noted the support she has received in getting acclimated to the online environment.

"Insight has a lot of helpful teachers who really want to see me do well," she said. "They like checking in on me so my mom doesn't have to worry that I'm not learning enough. I have never had any school staff pay this much attention to me and my grades and my education."

The online approach has allowed Colleen to "do school around bike racing and not have to compromise either one." And she has the time to share her avocation with her entire family. Her mother and father race in Masters level events, while all three of their children compete in Junior races.

Advantages of Insight for Colleen include "hundreds of classes to pick from," classes that are challenging, and personal attention and support.

"I have made several friends in my first semester," she notes. "And I feel like I really know all of my teachers. I talk to them on the telephone a lot, and I really like the live classes that allow me to interact with them. We send each other emails whenever we need to communicate as well."

Colleen shared a wonderful example of the kinds of activities made possible by attending Insight. She and her mother recently went to San Diego on two mornings to teach wounded soldiers how to ride a bike.

"It was awesome to tell them that I was able to be there because I do an online high school," Colleen said. "Then I spent my birthday at Disneyland and didn't get in trouble for an 'unexcused absence'."

Colleen had some words of advice for students considering an online program:

"It takes discipline to go online and get the work done. You have to learn how to find things and to not be afraid to ask for help, because there is more help available than I can believe!"
