Violence Brings Move to Online Environment

At Brandon Gray's local high school, there were several student factions often in conflict. And sometimes that conflict took a violent turn. Following a shooting after school, Brandon and his parents decided it was time for a change.

"Now I'm online, and it's great. I just shut my door and study five hours for my courses every day," Brandon said. "And I still have time to read science fiction and surf the 'net."

Brandon has found a safe environment to pursue his goal of attending college and earning a degree in civil engineering. In fact, he has already been attending classes at a Rio Hondo College to get a jump on his general education requirements as well as taking classes in music, piano and physical education to build up electives.

Being late for school, hassling with bad weather, fighting crowds and dealing with cafeteria food are things of the past for Brandon. And being able to do his class work at any time of day or night from the first level of his bedroom bunk bed is pretty sweet.

The quality of his classes is another important advantage of attending Insight compared to the local high school, according to Brandon. He is currently taking U.S. History, Global Economy, British Literature, American Literature, Geometry, and Internet Learning. That's a solid load, but having the flexibility to manage it online has made it possible.

After graduation, Brandon plans to gain his two-year degree at Rio Hondo College, then transfer for his final two years at Cal State Long Beach or Cal State Los Angeles.
