Seniors Prepare
for Life After High School
With the second semester underway, our seniors are busily preparing for life after high school. Here are a few profiles of what some of our students are doing to get ready for their future.
Roger Sanchez
Roger plans to attend college and possibly start a small business, most likely a computer repair shop. His goal is to earn a bachelor's degree in computer science, then pursue a master's degree. Roger has been accepted at all four colleges he applied to and will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Roger would like to become a software developer and contribute to the emerging fields of alternative energy and nanotechnology. He believes that technology can help stabilize our economy and improve environmental conditions.
"Our school has provided me with opportunities that I would have had a difficult time finding elsewhere," Roger said. "I was able to enroll in the computer science course, which gives me an advantage over students applying to the same major but without an introduction to the field. And the school has also helped me build sense of organization. It has provided me with an incredible gateway to success."
Andorian Ramsey
Andorian has been very busy preparing for graduation and college, while keeping up a perfect academic record as well as outside activities in volunteering and acting. He worked with the NAACP this past fall raising funds and awareness. And he has maintained high grades in challenging classes. Pursuing scholarships and submitting college applications has required a lot of time and careful thought.
Andorian has applied for the Gates Millennium scholarship offered through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He has applied to several top-name schools and has earned early acceptance at Howard University in Washington, DC. He plans to study law and may pursue political involvement, while continuing an avocation in acting.
"I decided to attend a HBCU (historically black college or university) for my undergrad so that I would get the full experience and still graduate law school from an Ivy League university as I originally planned," said Andorian. "I will probably do a double major in political science/pre-law and drama, so I can focus on both of the things I love."
Roxy Sosa
After high school graduation, Roxy plans to start working and continue with school. Her career interests include audio engineering, music production or computer science.
She is currently looking at both community colleges and four-year universities. Either way, she is planning to pursue internships to gain real-world experience. She will be submitting applications this month and taking the SAT. Her immediate focus is working hard on her school work with the goal of achieving a 4.0 grade average.
"Our school definitely helps its students become more independent and responsible," Roxy observed. "The staff is always very helpful and caring. Even though we don't work face to face with teachers, it's amazing how we can make bonds."
Gabriela Gutierrez
Gabi has worked exceptionally hard since coming to Insight when the school first opened. Her dedication has paid off as she as achieved academically despite the challenges of dyslexia. Gabi volunteers to help rehabilitate pets so they are more adoptable. And she has volunteered at local hospitals with a dream of becoming a physician. She has also worked throughout much of her time at Insight.
Gabi recently completed training to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). When she turns 18, she plans to take the test to be a registered EMT. Her goal is to work as an EMT while attending Santa Monica Community College next year.
