We Thought You Should Know:
Safety in a New Shelter
Of the more than 13,000 calls the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services receives each month, almost half require immediate action to ensure the safety of the children involved. The challenge for the County is to find a safe place for these children to stay that
meets their urgent physical and emotional needs. In 2004, Girls and Boys Town received over 1,600 referrals to our emergency shelters, and had the capacity to help nearly 600 of those kids. There are still hundreds of children who need immediate intervention and a safe place to live, learn and heal. When even one child must remain in crisis due to a lack of facilities, we are not fulfilling our pledge to bring help, healing and hope to Southern California's children and families.
To extend the reach of our services, Girls and Boys Town of Southern California and Lennar Homes OrangeCoast division are beginning construction of a third Emergency Shelter and Assessment Center near the city of Compton that is scheduled to open in the fall of 2006 . Lennar is donating goods and services to the shelter, and is working to have subcontractors donate as well. The center will be modeled after our existing program and will allow Girls and Boys Town to offer emergency services to almost 1,000 children annually.
If you would like to be invited to the groundbreaking and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facility, set to take place this January, please call (714) 532-2399 x207 or email stoloj@girlsandboystown.org and we'll add your name to our invitation list.
