Endevco reaches milestone of 4 million accelerometers delivered to leading medical device manufacturers with no field failures

Endevco Corporation, the leader in sensing solutions for demanding vibration, shock and pressure applications, has surpassed four million accelerometers supplied to the medical device industry for implantable applications without a single field failure.

Implantable medical devices are one of the most demanding accelerometer applications. Endevco designs and manufactures several models of accelerometers for implantable medical devices, including units with ceramic, piezoelectric, self-generating technology and units with silicon-based (MEMS), variable capacitance technology. Both product lines are attractive to implantable medical device manufacturers due to their large ratio of output signal to form factor, overall small size, and proven track record for reliability and ruggedness.

Endevco accelerometers are used in the majority of pacing devices, such as rate responsive heart pacemakers and defibrillators, manufactured globally. Other applications for Endevco sensors include external and internal implanted drug therapy systems, implanted pain management devices and methods to accurately measure traumatic brain injury.

"Over the last 10 years, we have expanded our medical business by increasing shipments to existing customers as well as acquiring new customers," said Jesse Bonfeld, Medical Market Segment Manager for Endevco. "As the use of implantable devices continues to grow with the aging population and development of new applications, we see customers continuing to demand the combination of reliability, performance and price competitiveness that only Endevco can offer."

Endevco's offerings include not only a broad line of standard products but also the capabilities to customize models with specific metallization protocols, dimensions, output characteristics, shock capabilities and frequency ranges to meet challenging application requirements.

Products for the medical market include the Endevco model 40366 hermetically sealed, surface mountable, variable capacitance MEMS device configured as a three-terminal half-bridge; the model 12M1A piezoelectric accelerometer with self-generating power engineered for easy integration into standard, hybrid or SMT electronic packages; and the model 32394 MEMS pressure sensor designed for high sensitivity, overpressure capability and linearity in an extremely small package.

"Reaching the four million device milestone speaks to the recognition by the industry of the value and performance of the Endevco technology," noted Endevco President Scott Silcock. "And to mark this achievement with the recognition that not a single field failure has occurred solidifies Endevco as the preferred global supplier of accelerometers for implantable medical devices."
